Bachelor Thesis
The thesis is the crowning achievement of your bachelor's degree. It allows you to demonstrate that you can analyse economic issues scientifically and that you are aware of the strengths and limitations of the methods used. Scientific work includes for example correct citation, reader-friendly writing, notational accuracy and, in the case of empirical work, the choice of a suitable methodology to answer your question. Interpreting and critically questioning the results shows that you are able to put your findings into context. The Institute can supervise theoretical and empirical work although empirical work is recommended.

Registration
Places to write your bachelor's thesis are allocated via a central application process run by the Dean's Office. This ensures that all students receive confirmation of supervision for their thesis and that there are no unnecessary delays in completing their studies. Once this process is complete the Dean's Office will inform you which institute you can write your bachelor's thesis at.

Topic Assignment
The linchpin of your thesis is the research question that needs to be answered. The research question runs like a thread through your work, providing important structure when writing your thesis and helping you decide which econometric methods to use. A good research question should first be of interest to you and second be feasible to work on within the available time and with the resources at your disposal. Only you can decide on the first point but we as your thesis supervisors are happy to assist you with the second. You can find a list of suggested topics here. However please feel free to approach us with your own ideas.

Master Thesis
The master's thesis is usually the last examination you take during your studies. For the initial period after graduation it is the flagship of your studies and aspects such as the research topic the methodology used and the results are popular opening questions in job interviews. Similar to the bachelor's thesis we also recommend empirical work for the master's thesis.

Topic Assignment
Given the importance of the master's thesis and the length of time required to complete it it is important to find a topic that suits you and your interests. Don't worry you will receive support and advice from the institute. However it is your responsibility to come up with an initial idea for a possible research question. It may be helpful to think back to past lectures: Which methods did you find exciting? Which economic questions fascinated you? Perhaps you stumbled across an interesting data set or came across an open topic in a seminar paper that you would like to explore further. Google Scholar can be a valuable aid in your search for inspiration.
